Wimbledon Racquets and Fitness Club

Environmental Policy

Introduction

Wimbledon Racquets and Fitness Club (the “club”) recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and to continually improving our environmental performance.

All employees and members have a responsibility to ensure that the aims and objectives of this policy are met.

Policy Aims

We endeavour to:

  • Comply with all relevant regulatory requirements;
  • Continually improve environmental performance;
  • Continually improve, and reduce, our impact on the environment;
  • Consider the impact on the environment when making business decisions;
  • Improve employees’ awareness and training.

Solar Panel

The club hosts panels on some of the roof spaces and contributes towards the national grid.

Shuttlecock usage

All club-led sessions recycle shuttlecocks for the Saturday junior sessions to reduce wastage as well as the cost implication of always supplying brand new. With this in mind, members should not take shuttlecocks from the marked shuttlecock bins – they are not being thrown away but recycled for another session.

Bar and Catering

The coffee purchased by the club is Fair Trade and is obtained from a local business. Used coffee grounds are recycled for horticultural purposes.

Draught beers and bottled drinks are purchased from local producers which reduces deliveries from national depots.

Gas, Electricity and Water

The club is reliant predominately on gas heaters on the courts; there is no insulation which results in very high gas usage and high heating costs.

The club is committed to the use of energy-saving light bulbs throughout its premises and when affordable we convert to LEDs.

The saunas are available for members for limited hours (or on request) to ensure there is no unnecessary wastage of electricity.

Members are requested to help by using court heaters only when the temperature falls below 15C and therefore feels cold. Please ensure that lights and heaters are turned off when leaving the courts

Please do not waste water and turn off taps when finished.

We will seek to:

  • Reduce the amount of energy used as much as possible.
  • Switch off lights and gas or electrical equipment when not in use.
  • Consider energy consumption and the efficiency of new products when purchasing them.

Recycling and Waste

The club has invested in new bins throughout the premises in an effort to improve our waste management and ensure that we recycle items appropriately. All new bins have clear signage, and we ask members to dispose of their rubbish or recycling correctly.

We will seek to:

  • Evaluate how our recycling can be improved;
  • Minimise the use of paper at the club;
  • Reuse or recycle all possible items.

Lost property

The club is currently keeping lost property for one month after which:

  • Clothes will be donated to charity.
  • Racquets will be reused and may be kept as hire racquets.

Maintenance and Cleaning

We will seek to:

  • Use environmentally friendly cleaning materials;
  • Only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste.

Culture and Other Improvements

We will seek to:

  • Favour more environmentally friendly and efficient products and evaluate their impact on the environment prior to purchase.
  • Involve staff and members in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance.
  • Use local labour and materials where available to reduce CO2 and help the community.
