Rohan Papadakos on Firing Team Merton into the London Youth Games Finals

An Interview with our promising Junior Squash Player – Rohan Papadokas

How old were you when you started playing squash?

I started playing squash when I was 10 years old (I am now 12). Initially it was just for fun, so I did some drop-in sessions just to see if I liked it or not. Then when I realised I really liked playing, I started playing once a week at Wimbledon Racquets on a Sunday. Now I play approximately 3 times a week including at school as well.

What do you enjoy most about playing squash?
I like the strategy involved in it, for example trying to work out where your opponent might be hitting next and anticipating their next shot, I am competitive in a lot of things including sport! I like that it’s fast paced and it’s active. I also like that it doesn’t matter what the weather is outside (I also play golf and football and they can be really miserable in bad weather).

What’s your favourite shot or part of the game?
My favourite shot is a boast because it can be used in many situations and used to trick your opponent.

What made you chose Wimbledon Racquets?
It is close to my home, and the coaches are really nice. I have had some really good 1:1 coaching sessions at the club. The weekend sessions are really good and I like doing them. I liked the camps too, and it was easy to book a court to play with a friend, but also really convenient to do solo practice as well. I really like the food in the bar- once I had some Malaysian food and I liked it so much that I keep asking my mum if I can have it again. Lastly, the club has given me many opportunities, for example, to play against other Surrey teams in friendlies, and also last year, to train with those participating in the London Youth Games; and this year being on the London Youth Games team.

What goals do you have in Squash?
To keep improving my game in general. I think my return of serve needs to improve because it would set me up well for the rest of the point. To try and get the best results that I can.
